Here you will find everything you need to follow your immigration procedure: how to enter the Sede Electrónica, what each processing status means and what to do if your immigration file has had no news for weeks. We also explain the EX forms step by step, the TIE documents for each stage and how to check the status of your Spanish citizenship application by residence, all in one place.

What is the immigration file (expediente de extranjería) and why should you check it?

The immigration file (expediente de extranjería) is the complete record of your application with the administration. It is not the same as your TIE: the file is the process and the TIE is the final physical document. You can have a file in progress without your card existing yet. Checking it lets you know which stage you are at, whether documents are missing or whether it has already been approved.

How to check your file step by step

Follow these steps to check your immigration file without leaving home:

  1. Go to the Sede Electrónica de las Administraciones Públicas (sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es).
  2. Identify yourself with your digital certificate, Cl@ve or the details of your file.
  3. Select the procedure and check the current status.
  4. Interpret the result with the help of the status table below.

If you don’t have a digital certificate, you can also check it with your file number and your personal details.

What do the statuses of your immigration file mean?

StatusWhat it means
En trámite (in progress)Your application is being reviewed. It is the most common status and can last several weeks.
En estudio (under review)An official is analysing your documents. You may be asked for additional information.
Resuelto – Favorable (approved)Your application has been approved. Now you have to wait for the physical card to be ready.
Resuelto – Desfavorable (refused)Your application has been refused. Check the notification to find out the reasons and the deadlines to appeal.
Archivado (closed)The file has been closed because of missing documents or inactivity. You can usually reopen it by submitting what is missing.

The fact that your file is resolved does not mean your TIE is already at the police station: you first have to do the fingerprinting (toma de huellas), and the card takes a few weeks to be made and to arrive.

How long does an immigration procedure take to be resolved?

There is no single deadline: it depends on the type of procedure, the immigration office handling it and the time of year. If your immigration file has had no news for a long time, check on the Sede Electrónica that you have not been asked for documents and make sure your notification details are correct.

Frequently asked questions about immigration procedures

We answer your main questions about the immigration file and how to check it.

How do I check the status of my immigration procedure?

You check it on the Sede Electrónica de las Administraciones Públicas, using the details of your file. At Portal Extranjería we explain the process step by step and what each status means.

What does each status of my immigration file mean?

The most common statuses are: En trámite (your application is under review), En estudio (an official is analysing it), Resuelto – Favorable (approved) and Resuelto – Desfavorable (refused). Each one tells you which stage your application is at.

Can I check my immigration procedure if I live in another province?

Yes. The online check works from anywhere in Spain. However, the TIE can only be collected at the police station (comisaría) where you had your fingerprints taken (toma de huellas).

How long does an immigration procedure take to be resolved?

It depends on the type of procedure and on the immigration office handling it. The resolution tells you the next step: usually, booking an appointment for fingerprinting (toma de huellas).

My procedure has been approved. Can I already collect my TIE?

Not yet. After the favourable resolution you have to book an appointment for fingerprinting (toma de huellas); then the card takes a few weeks to be made and to reach your police station (comisaría). To find out whether it has arrived, check the latest lote at your police station.
