The EX-01 form is the essential official form that non-EU nationals must submit if they want to live in Spain for more than ninety days without doing any work or professional activity. Filling in this immigration form correctly and proving the required funds is the key step to obtaining non-lucrative temporary residence.

What is the EX-01 form for?

The official EX-01 form formally governs the application for non-lucrative temporary residence. It is designed for retirees, investors with passive income or foreign nationals with proven financial means who decide to live in Spain without entering the labour market.

Key Points: Financial Means and Profiles

📌 Financial Solvency (IPREM)

You must prove sufficient resources (at least 400% of the monthly IPREM for the main applicant, plus an extra 100% for each dependent family member).

🔄 No Work Allowed

This authorisation only allows you to reside; it does not allow employed or self-employed work or professional activity.

Steps to fill in the form correctly

  1. Applicant details: Enter your personal information (name, surnames, passport) exactly as it appears on your official documents.
  2. Address for notifications: Give a valid postal address or contact method in Spain to receive communications about the procedure.
  3. Type of application: Mark clearly with a cross whether it is an initial authorisation (usually processed from your home country) or specific cases of extension or minors.
  4. Signature and submission: Check that all fields are filled in capital letters, in print or typed, and sign the form.

Mandatory documents to submit

Together with the EX-01 form duly completed and signed, you will usually need to provide a file that includes:

  • Full passport: Copy of all pages and the valid original (minimum validity of one year).
  • Financial means: Bank statements, property deeds or income certificates proving financial sufficiency.
  • Health insurance: Public or private health insurance with a company authorised to operate in Spain, with full coverage.
  • Criminal record certificate: Issued by your country of origin or of residence over the last 5 years, duly apostilled or legalised.
  • Medical certificate: Proving that you do not suffer from any disease with serious public health implications.

Processing times and legal validity

A critical regulatory point when using the EX-01 form is that the initial authorisation granted is valid for one year in Spain. The maximum legal time for the administration to decide on the application is three months from the date it is registered with the competent body. Once approved and after obtaining the corresponding visa, you must apply for the physical foreign national identity card (TIE) within one month of arriving in Spain.
